I have the 58" Extra from EF as many know and at present it has a 90 4 stroker up front ... which hauls her round no problem.
But lately after flying the Zlin with E-Power up front - has me thinking to swap out the 4 stroker and put electric in her.
I would use the same as the Zlin ... Turnigy 5055 400KV with 6S pack ... on a 15" prop.
That would tend to consolidate on what I have without increasing my range of inventory.
I have a new untouched cowl - so that's ready to go on. Would mean cutting out the fuel engine mount and fitting suitable standoff's for E-power ...
mmmmmmm interesting .............
As you see - she has a problem of still rolling when Idle ... so E-Power would cure that.
The 4 stroker can then go in my biplane if needed or my other Zlin.

I'll be honest - I don't like the model having bought it second-hand from a guy who thought he could fly ! It had minor repairs and a gutless engine in it.
It crashed due to his poor hinges one day --- that'll teach me to trust other guys work ! And needed major rebuild.
But flying the E powered Zlin is a dream .... OK no engine sound which I miss .... but nice.
I've ordered the 5055 and ESC ....
I have wood etc. to build a motor box.
Cheers

I have a Fly Zone 300, and although I have tried hard to like it, I just can't get there. Just feels awkward and heavy in the air like it would rather fall than fly. They market it as a 3D plane but I certainly don't see it. Very stall prone IMO

I'm taking a serious look at the 48" EF edge 540 for my first balsa plane.
Any opinions?

Seriously .... dunno ...
What I will say based on mine and others I fly with :
EF make good aircraft but a little heavier than say Precision Aerobatics. They 3D well but need that bit more grunt. PA are fragile where EF are that bit stronger.

Was hell bent on an addiction. Then I heard that they aren't that tough, support is lacking, and they aren't an easy build. Great flyers, but everything else I don't like. I'm selfish and just in this for the fun

One thing I like to do, certainly not required, is to replace the CA hinges with Dubro nylon hinges, epoxied in. They offer zero resistance and are way less prone to failure. I also run a slightly stronger HS-70MG on the elevator. ZTW Mantis 65A and 80A ESC's (get the 80, same weight) offer a programmable 6 volt BEC. In this application, you will want the suggested Hitec servos to be running at this, maximum voltage.

Pretty proud of the hinge line

If you really want to go bananas, throw a set of these in there with a 7.4v BEC. I have them in my 47" extra and all I can say is WOW. 49 oz-in of torque and 0.05sec to 60 degrees.
I just couldn't ignore the Hitec servos I had sitting on the bench for this build.

I have the exact same airplane with a Turnigy propdrive 4250 500kv in it. That was the closest thing I could find to the motor Extreme Flight recommended.
I haven't flown it yet, I traded a bunch of trailer hitch parts for a RV trailer for it.

4250 was my first thought ... but had the 5055 spare ...
It hauled my Zlin of similar weight into the clouds ... with 6S battery - the combo balances perfect.
