Many years ago - I flew into Beirut shortly after the bomb took out an aircraft - leaving a wrecked aircraft and crater alongside main runway ... we landed with Crash Trucks visibly running along the access parellel to us in case of a repeat ...................

Makes you sit and think very carefully what you are doing and why there !!

We spent 2 nights in the Hotel near seafront. First night - myself and another Officer .... we went for a stroll .... got stopped at a military barrier .... a VERY ENGLISH voice from the Officer obviously in charge advised us to slowly turn around and walk back where we came from .... as incentive he pointed out the sharpshooters looking down on us ready to send lead our way !!
When I got home .... I was sitting watching TV news with my Mother ...... a news item was of a mortar shell that exploded on the same floor of the hotel we had been staying in just days before !!
