just ordered a Scorpion 2208-34 and 25amp ESC I plan on putting in an Alfa Models P-47. I hope these scorpions live up to some of the hype I've been reading about
No hype ,just performance.

Guess not.

I had hoped that Randy would use my numbers in post

http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/show...&postcount=174

and find a Scorpion with as good or better effeciency.

Rimfire is in the 80% effeciency range according to the calc program I used and I know these numbers are better than any of my compariable(?) Scorpions based on past testing.

Would ask on the other site but what a mess .

Default Electrostick Power

Guys - I still vote for the 3020-12 motor as a replacement for the Rimfire. The description of the Rimfire power system for the Electrostick says "up to 77% efficiency". The 3020-12 is about the same size and weight as the Rimfire and would provide a really wide range of performance with different sizes of props. If efficiency is a concern you could run an APC 10x5 prop which is 79.4% efficient on a 4-cell A123 pack. This still gives you 59oz of thrust which is a bit over a 1:1 power ratio. This only pulls a max of 31A according to Scorpion Calc. If you decided this wasn't enough power for your taste you could simply change the prop all the way up to a 12x6 for gobs more power at 88oz of thrust, 52.6A.

I've used the 3020-12 in a number of planes this size and always been happy with the results. It's one of the most popular motors in the 30mm series. I normally run them on a 3-cell lipo with a APC 12x6 prop which seems to be the best setup (77oz thrust @ 42A in bench tests).

Looks like the stock prop for the Rimfire is a 11x8.5 by the way.

Thoughts?

Thanks Randy.

Everytime I run Scorpion calc I end up bouncing between 32020-12 and 3020-14 for 4S and 5S A123.'
To me the 3020-14 is the closest to the RimFire 4042-1000

RimFire 12X8 4S actual 7,700 / 38.5A / 418 watts
Scorp Calc 3020-14 12X8 4S 7,800 / 42 A / 430 watts

I have a 3020-12 on my EF Yak 54E which I rarely fly so I may just give it a go . I know I have measured 650 watts with a 4S A123 and a 13X6.5 on it.

I think you're right about that. The 3020-12 is just a bit more Kv than the rimfire, and the 3020-14 is just a bit under the Kv of the Rimfire.

I was just looking at what I thought might power that plane well. Obviously the 3020-12 or 3020-14 is the closest match. Deciding on one or the other probably depends on what prop you'd want to run on the Electrostick.

Thanks for your input. You've got some good data and real-world experience with A123 cells which we all know Foamiesrfun LOVES.

Blame EDF for that lol, he started flying A123 before me ( only cause he had planes that would carry the weight) as soon as I got a plane that would I got them also, I love them. really made my 480 e flite come alive.
Thanks for all the data. Maybe I can talk edf into us trying his motor on my stick( just ordered it) to see how it works then if it works well I will buy one. I appreciate all the info you try to give us on these motors.
I would most likley just get a rimefire but there not avl. untill Oct. and i do like these scorpion motors.

Liquidity,

That plane is so cool. I'm glad to see you completed that airplane as I was quite interested in how it would turn out. Let us know how it flies when you've done the maiden.

That would make a great addition to the Scorpion powered models webpage.... mind if I add it?

Chris,

Awesome twins you have there! They remind me of my E-flight Mini Ultra Stick. Great all-around sport planes with no bad habits, easy to handle, and wide performance envelope. It's been one of my most-flown planes this past couple years.

Can I add it?

WOW. I flew the Deuces Wild today. Excellent flyer and a lot of fun. Once I got calmed down, I had a blast with it. Scorpions are the way to go with it.

Just reenforce the firewalls!!!

I took a nice long roll out slowly increasing power. I did not want the firewall to bust out. See my build thread for more information. My landing was really fast, but for te first flight I would rather be too fast than to slow.

The video is coming uploading to Youtube as we speak and will be posted in the build thread.

Default Scorpion page update

Foamiersrfun/Liquidity,

I've added your planes to the Scorpion powered models webpage which helped me complete the page. You can check them out at the bottom of page 3. Let me know if I made any mistakes. Notice the touch up on both your photos - Chris actually disappeared from his so no one is holding the plane anymore.

Thanks guys! We're sure getting a lot of planes from Georgia on there! On to page 4. Thats 60 models now. I'd like to get up to 100 by the end of the year so keep them coming.

Awesome. I have a couple more models you can add to the site if you would like. A mini Telemaster and a Telemaster Electra. I will get you some pics and info tomorrow.
I am too lazy now to take that big Telemaster down.

I would have a Scorpion powered Micro Telemaster also, but Scorpion does not make anything that small.
