Default Receiver Battery?

Hi all,

Is it better to use a seperate battery for the receiver as I had a 4xAA pack with my Tx.

Is thier much difference in flying times?

What size/weight of model needs a seperate battery and are they practical for small/medium electric aircraft?

For smallish planes using micro and mini servos you don't usually need that receiver battery pack as the BEC device in the ESC will usually be good enough. Until you start getting into bigger planes or planes with many hi power servos would you need to do something like a separate pack. Of course, each plane is different and each setup would need to be evaluated for needed flight pack power requirements.

usually only the larger birds use a separate Rx battery due to weight constraints. On my heli's and full house birds that have more than 4 servos, a UBEC is recommended due to the loads of the servos not being met with the integrated BEC in your ESC (usually only rated to 2 or 3 amps). this is especially true when using digital servos as when they are in a stalled state, they can pull a considerable amperage...

You have to start getting in some bigger aircraft to make it worthwhile. The smaller park flyer types will not be happy with the added weight of a RX pack.

I don't fly a separate pack in anything but my biggest electric. A 1/5th scale Waco. Everything else either uses the BEC in the Rx or an External BEC.

The radio gear does not draw that much juice so I doubt you would see much difference in flight times. My 1100 mah 6 volt Rx pack in my Waco will last at least 15 flights (probably longer) without needing a recharge.

In real hotliners a separate RX-batteri is a must. Load is often 30C+, amps could be 150-200 peak, and the chance for blowing motor-batteries and ESC is far higher than in normal setups.
