Default Fan Fold Questions

Back in November of last year I had a stroke,I am recovering slowly. I have been back flying for some time but not at the skill level I was at before the stroke, I have crashed and destroyed 6 slow sticks sence my return this cant go on for too much longer as I am on a disability budget. I have found the plans for several foam slowflyers and am going to try them. I went to Lowes today and they had the fanfold foam, but they only had the type with the film on one side. Is this foam going to be okay for building or should I keep looking for the foam with the film on both sides. Any help will be appricated. Army Dad

I work with the single sided foam all the time. Plenty of guys do. I prefer the rough side for my gluing, and keep the skinned side out whenever possible. It paints easier.

I usually end up peeling the skin off of most of one side anyway for gluing purposes. The single sided stuff will do just fine.

AD, sorry to hear about your health. I love the stuff with skin on both sides (Blucore), I also use the Protection Board III (skin on one side). If you plan to build with the PBIII then you just need a little extra renforcment. Unless your going full fuse and built up wing. I would get the single side stuff and just keep an eye out for the Blucore.

AD, since your on a budget as most of us are nowadays. Heres a little tip for bracing, I use those bamboo skewers for Shishcabob (sp?) you can get them at wally world for like a buck, there about a foot long and come in a pack of 50 or 100. Not quit sure. The diameter is about 1/8".
For cheap landing gear wire, I use those little flags used by companies to locate their utlities. You can usually find them at construction sites, just make sure the work is all done first. Being in the construction field its pretty nerve racking when they are gone before the work starts. You could also call a one call (utility locate) in for your house and have them locate with flags only (say yuo don't want paint on your drive or grass) then take them. Then you could just buy some, they run about 15-35 cents each. They come in different lenghts, I like the 24" ones. They also make great pushrods and tail skids.
Just a little help on saving a buck or two. Thats whats great about scratch builing, you can use pretty much anything to build with.

Army Dad, perhaps you should consider EPP foam, rather than the fanfold. EPP is more durable and lighter than fanfold.

I have a LightFlite Bug that is available as a kit for around $150, complete. It can be flown indoors in a large enjoin building. It is designed to take a beating and keep on flying.

Here is a build thread for the Bug.

There are other EPP kits available. Do a Google search on EPP and you should find something you like.

There are several sources for EPP in sheets that you can cut and build the planes. EPP is just a little more flexible and needs some carbon bracing in strategic places.

Hope this helps

Have you found any easy way to get the skin off?

Gohmer:
Back when I used FFF I would pick a corner loose and then wrap it around a old broom stick or dowell and then roll the dowel diagonally across the sheet. When and if the skin tore loose I would go to another corner and do the same thing. You just have to keep picking at it untill you got it all off.
Good Luck

Rolling the skin off FFF by using a dowel or piece of tubing works great for me, too. I usually use a roller that is about 3/4-inch in diameter. I don't roll it diagonally, however.

I carefully peel up the skin along one whole edge and roll straight up the piece of foam. If the skin breaks and sticks to the foam, just peel up the stuck section of film and keep rolling.

If you are lucky, you can sometimes roll the film off a large piece of foam in one piece.
