Default E-Flite Ultimate FX 3D Flight Report

Well, I finally had a chance to put the bipe in the air. I took it to the club field on Eglin Air Force base to enjoy the advatage of the extra room.

It's powered with the supplied Park 400. The speed control is a Castle Creations Phenoix 25. I am using a combination of Hitec HS 55's and a Bluebird 306 servo.

I tossed it in the air with Buckshot as a witness. It was very responsive on the ailerons. Of course, I didn't take Murph's advice to put them on reduced rates. Call me a rebel.

After a few circuits of the field, and a couple spins, loops and rolls, I brought it back in. I knew that it wouldn't like the grass field on landing. When it touched down, the typical ground loop followed, but with no damage.

Buckshot was handed the video camera, and told to get some shots. I again handlaunched the plane and it flew great again. Did the same procedure of basic stunts, with a hammerhead stall or two thrown in. Again, the ground loop on landing. I need to find a better way.

I decided next to take advantage of the asphault runway that served bombers in WWII. Resurfaced on a small part, makes an excellent surface for our scale planes. Take off was ugly with a scrape of the right wing tip, but once in the air it was a beautiful sight. I brought it around for an approach, called "Landing!" I lined it up with the resurfaced blacktop and greased it in. I even heard a couple cheers of good job, or nice landing.

I am guessing I surprised them with this, as much as it surprised me.

I decided I had enough of trying to fly with the slimers, and went back to the grass. I threw the bipe in the air again and put it through it's paces. During one outside loop I saw something fall from the plane. I was sure it was the battery, except I still had control. Nope, it was the landing gear. It flew a little faster without the extra drag.

I was warned that the battery was getting low, with a motor cut off. I throttled it all the way back, and eased it forward again. Brought it around for a landing, and as it touched down, heard a nasty crunch. It sounded worse than it was. The foam seemed to have amplified the sound. All that happened was the aileron servo broke free slightly. So, I called it quits for that round, and packed it in.

I made some repairs when I got home. Took the plane up the street to my personal field, and put it in the air a couple times. The wind was up. When I put it above the treeline I was rewarded with a gut wrenching vision of the plane being slammed around. I brought it back down lower and decided to try for a landing. WeaZilla was gleeful to catch the flip flop of yet another ground loop on video.

Of course, the next few landings that were smooth and uneventully performed on pavement were NOT caught on film. Oh well. At least the ugly ROG attempt where I tried going 45 degrees to the gusting winds, and got to see my plane flipped and cartrolled across the grass. I went and inspected for damage. I couldn't find any. But luckily I decided to check the security of the linkages. One of the aileron servo links had worked loose, and it left one side of the ailerons drooping.

For a change, I decided to quit while I was ahead. And home I went.

A great plane, and if I don't crash it first, I hope to be able to fly this at Hodge's next weekend when I visit.

Here is a photo, video I hope will follow....

Good looking bipe Fred. Glad to hear it didn't end up in the trash can. Looks like it flew nice.

One of my club guys has had a terrible time learning....He has had 2 of those...
The first was crashed so much it was more ca and epoxy than foam, and it still flew......I named it the "Lazarus" Bipe because he kept bringing it back from the dead....

It's final destruction was a severe impact next to the safety fence...the tail exploded into many many small pieces, and the remains of the bipe went up 3 feet into a 3-4 second hover/torque roll then came crashing down to finish the job....

People still talk about that one at the field...

So where is the other videos?

I haven't even downloaded the cartwheel ones yet.

I am not liking the way these are uploading.

very relieved you didn't kill the bipe! when you mentioned the "kids", I had visions of horrible unspeakable acts of biplane torture performed by them!

That wasn't the entire flight, you boob!

I am lucky the dang thing let me upload that much.

I need to figure out how to edit for internet posting.

So it's compressed to the right size, and not left to the butchery of whatever program is doing it on that end.

I think I might finish my E-Flite P-47 tomorrow.

I should have a decent fleet for my trip to Hodge's (home of SEFF) this coming weekend.
