Although I have been fly R/C, both gas and electric for many years this morning was the first chance I have had to fly a ducted fan model. It was a very small foam model of the Mig-15 that belonged to a good friend of mine. The little thing flew quite well, fast and nimble for it sizes and generally a lot of fun.

I have looked at some jets, and maybe, I say MAYBE, I will make an investment in a ducted fan plane. One thing that quickly became obvious electric fan units are light years ahead of gas driven fan units and not far from the turbines.

Welcome to the edf world. 2 to 4 minutes of pure screaming fun ! No need for a wet turbine AMA certificate and thousands of dollars invested . LOL I have a wide range of these little guys from the Jpowers 50mm series( T-45, F-16, T-33) to the 64mm F9F Panther, EF-16, F4N Phantom II and the Freewing Stinger 64 Mk2. From an
ease of flying standpoint, the "beer cooler" EF-16 from Hobby People is the easiest to fly followed closely by the Freewing F9F Panther from Value Hobby. For more speed, the 4S Stinger Mk2 from HK or Motionrc is a hoot to fly. Still trying to get my grossly underpowered Phantom II to fly more than 20 feet. LOL

What's fun is that you can throw a few in the back seat and mix up your flying experience at the field with your larger craft. Plus, they're generally cheap. Most of mine are under $100.00 complete.

That's the big issue. Many of the ARF EDF's come underpowered. Best to buy without the electronics and put in a good power system. My favorites now are the HK F-4D-1 Skyray and my old Starmax F-35. Both 64mm, and both can climb straight up.

Dahawk, which Phantom do you have? Just bite the bullet and re-power it!

Have the Jpowers 64mm I bought through Atomikrc. Not in the same category as your e-flight but as a huge fan of the Phantom, especially, the J & N versions, I had to have one. WTS and myself have attempted to hand launch her on a couple of occassions using the prescribed 3S pack. Hardly gets airborne. Wants a long take off roll to build airspeed I think or a catapult. Best I've been able to do so far is a mamby-pamby torque roll into the ground.

So, what' I've done now is change out the esc to a 50 amp'r and will try next time with 4S.

Ugh! The F-4D-1 Skyray (Ford) stock also uses a 3s 1300 battery, which tells you there is not much power there! I tried racing a HZ SuperCub and barely won. I upgraded once to a more powerful 3S fan/motor combo and cut foam to fit a 3s 2200. That was pretty good, but something drove me to get a 4s capable fan/motor, and fit in a 4s 2200, and now I can go vertical as soon as she rotates off the ground. I got that fan/motor from FanjetsUSA, but they don't carry it anymore. I did find http://shulmanaviation.com/product_i...oducts_id=1725 at Schulman Aviation. (Don't know why the link gadget did that. I'm at a work computer.) This is what I would pick up if I was getting one now. Yep, it costs some, but if you wanna play, you gotta pay. Just have to make sure you can cram in the battery. I found Zippy Compacts work well, and actually are a bit smaller in the right places than other 4s 2200's. Sure the motor and battery will add weight, but you won't care! Just an idea.

Thanks for the tip on Shulman. Quality stuff, no doubt there. The metal 64 edf combo is about what my F4 costs. It's pretty cheap foam so I think I'll first try 4S and see if the stock motor can handle it. It's a 3900KV motor. I just upped the esc to 50amp.

Abborgogna, sorry we went way off topic here. Guess we're like little kids just getting excited about this stuff. Was that MiG you flew the E-flite one? If so, I guess you're aware of the AS3X stabilization?
