Default Slow Stick ESC & Battery

Afternoon all, I am looking for a little help with my Slow Stick. This is my 3rd plane and proving to be the biggest challenge after reading many threads on power set-ups for this a/c. I have a Slow Stick with the EPS-300C-DS, the a/c came with an 11x8 propeller (ok with me, would like to experiment with others though). My question is this; ESC and battery setup, I am confused. I made the jump to LiPo with my second plane (a Carl Goldberg Tiger 400 that is a great little plane!), so I am already sold on the benefits of LiPos. I have a CellPro Direct 4S charger and am using ThunderPower cells with good luck. What I am having a hard time figuring out is a good ESC & LiPo combination for my Slow Stick. I was thinking about a 910 mah, 7.4 volt, 2 cell pack, and for an ESC something in the 15-20 amp range. Thoughts? Recommendations? experienced modelers with wisdom to share? Thanks!

I'm running a 2410-09 with a 20 amp esc that I got from Headsuprc. With that combo, and a 11.1v 20c 2200mah battery, I get 40+ minute flights putting around at 50%. I love it. Grab the lawn chair, a refreshing beverage of your choosing, and kick back and relax. Great after stressful days at work.

That'll work fine. The 300 will burn up in short order on 3S. On 2S it'll be pulling less than 10A. Most of the NiMh uses with it are ~900mAh. The SS will handle most any weight you throw at it so if you want more flight time get larger batteries. I've used 2200mAh on mine all the time (3S/brushless).

Thanks for the info. Can I assume that I am shortening the life on the stock GWS brushed motor by running the LiPos, or could I get away with the 910 mah 2S battery and not cook the motor? I had thought about replacing the stock motor but wanted to try to use it at least for awhile.
I am leaning towards a 15A ESC and the 2S 910 mah battery unless there is a strong reason not to go that route.

Thanks for the feedback and guidance....a quick question for totalsnafu, I am looking at headsuprc and the "PowerUp" lipo they cell, what kind of adapter would I need to charge those with my CellPro charger? I can't find an exact match, and those lipos are tempting at that price. any thoughts?

Here ya go,,A standard 2-pin JST connector is installed. The balance connector is the JST XH series 3 pin with 2.5mm pin spacing.

I'm so glad I found this thread! So I bought my SS last night and was up till Very Early assembling it. I have come to find that I need an ESC and Battery pack. My SS has the Stock Motor which I think is a EPS 400. Really being so new to this, I really don't know what to get for it. I'd love long flight times, speed isn't on my priority list. I am using the guts from a Wattage Cessna 180. So it Just looks to me like I need the ESC and Battery. Any suggestions would be GREAT, like what kinds and where the best deals are. Trying to do it on the cheap as it is my starter plane which I plan on flying till it cant fly no more!

Mhworley::Its a 4-channel FM 27mhz transmitter&reciever so you'd probably need to use it all except the moter, you can use it though you may need to solder some extensions on it, It'll be mighty under powered,,hope this helped, your bub, steve

Cool thats what I was hoping, though it is so under powered It wont turn the motor. To me it looks like I need a better ESC and Battery. Am I crazy? or on the right track?

That's poor. You would like to see 3.0v/cell. If you fly by time and keep the RESTING voltage > 3.7v/cell you should be OK.
It's a problem with brushed LVC-many are not REALLY lipo friendly.
That stock battery from the Wattage will barely turn over the 400C.

6C is a pretty low discharge rating. GWS batteries are pretty lame.
No balance adapter either. Don't bother.You can do better.

There are a bunch of others.

You might consider a Towerpro + ESC + 3S lipo package from Head's up. He lists some specific motor/prop/ESC combos for the SS. Good site to browse for new fliers absorbing motor/ESC data.
The whole price would not be much different from what you were thinking and work better.

So, I've got a story to tell now, I went to ultimate hobbies out here and almost walked out $108 poorer. They weren't very helpful, likely because they work on commission, so I was being up-sold. A little frustrated I went to Hobby People, they are like 2 blocks from each other. They hooked me up right away and got me the stuff that would work. So I got NiMH battery, nice an cheap and good enough for a beginner like me. And for ESC a Super Micro ESC by Airtronics. And I got some Deans power connectors to hook it all up. They were a pain to solder! But I got it to work. Now I just need to wait for a day with less wind. Thanks for all your help everyone you guys helped me make some good decisions.

Was it at LEAST a 7-cell? The 400 won't hardly run on a 6-cell. 8-cell is good, 9-cell better.

Be SURE to follow the links. One is a good video. It gets easier after awhile. A soldering iron with some heft and power is important. Speed and technique are critical for a good solder join. My first 5-10 worked but looking back had problems.

After three eye operations, and at least one more to come, (retina problems) I bought the Slow Stick as well. I use to fly my giant ugly stick with a Zenoah G23 on it. I have not flown since last year, and have decided this would be a slow and easy plane to start with again.

I bought the SS without the power system, and have put on Hitec 55 servos. it is all assembled except for the motor, esc, battery and receiver. I will be picking up a Hitec micro receiver, and probably the 2410-09 and 20 amp ESC from Heads UP. My friend has one and suggested a 2409-21 he said it would add a little speed to the plane. I just want to do some easy flying and get use to one eye flying, so I will probably go with the 2410-09.

As for LIPOs, I have seen some Mystery brand lipos on ebay fairly cheap. Are they any good? I am thinking of staying in the three cell 1300 to 1600 mAh range.

Good thread so far I will monitor it.

Jeff is an excellent vendor and lacks Nothing when it comes to customer service/support. He carries every possible hop-up you could want for the Stick, including very affordable brushless esc's, motors, and lipo's. Before I found his store I thought I'd never enter the world of Brushless because of my budget, but Heads Up made it possible

I've got the 2410-09Y Outrunner with the 20A ESC, and a couple of 11.1V Lipo's that offer all the power you could want.

Cool Don't forget

I would reccomend thicker shafts for beginners.I've noticed most of the motors you've talked about have thin shafts, lacking durability.Thicker shafted Brushless Outrunners are more expensive but are hard to bend on bad landings.Cheaper motors are less durable with thinner shafts,meaning it could just be a waste of money.

If you install a prop saver and cut off the remainder of the shaft that will solve all the bent shaft problems.

Heads Up RC looks like the place I am going to get my stuff. I first found HeadsUp RC on Ebay. What receiver is everyone running? I thought that might be a area NOT to get cheap in. I have thought of the Hitec Micro 05.

That's what I'm using (Hitec Micro HFS-05 ), not bad price wise, and so far I've had no issues with it. Light-weight too... (PS Headsup is the place to go!)

Fresbill: I realize you didn't direct your question to me, but since I've got the same power setup as TS... I'm running the GWS EP 1147. My largest battery is only a 1650mah, and I like to do alot of vertical flight/loops, so my run times aren't as long, but it's a Good prop. Low pitch so it's not too fast and has plenty of thrust.
