I fly in the Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls Wisconsin area.
Mostly I fly little planes and helis and just go out in front
of my house. I have also flown with the Marshfield club and
I have visited Marshall field in Thorp---what a GREAT site
that is.

I live in East Granby, CT. I fly with the Simsbury Radio
Control Club at the Nod Road field. During the summer I also fly in Derby, Vermont.I have the use of a 200 plus acres field'. Vermont field slopes down from east to west. Prevailing wind is mostly from the west. A great site for flying my Vista glider.

As you can see, they tried it with the stock set-up, a brushed Speed 400 6V and the Gunther 5" x 4" plastic push-on prop. From their accounts it flew pretty well and good duration, too. This was with a 7 cell (8.4V) NiMH 1050mAH pack.
Well, I was interested in finding out what kind of thrust this combination would produce, so I ran it through the free calc;
http://brantuas.com/ezcalc/dma1.asp
And, it's about 13.5 ounces static. Since this is about 1/2 the weight of the RTF model, it means the model is definitely in the "Sport" or Trainer class, not much extra power, if any. Sailplanes can fly with less power (watts per pound) than most models, so it should be OK.
That's fine if you want to invest in a 15A-20A brushed ESC, NiMH or NiCad charger and packs and fly it that way. If you plan to move to LiPo's and brushless, it means another charger (or, one that does everything, LiPo, NiMH, NiCad), a brushless ESC and brushless motor. Which would be my choice. Most flyers who try brushless/LiPo don't go back to brushed/NiMH, unless they already own the support equipment.
Here's the brushed motor;

The problem is, the motor is mounted on a pylon, which limits the prop diameter. I'm guessing it won't take much more than 6" diameter, but I've never measured it.
If you want to try a brushless LiPo combo, post here and we'll try to fix you up.
If not, http://www.mountainmodels.com/produc...66e4375d8ad6a3
This is about the finest brushed ESC made, you can get other brands for 1/3 the price. JMO.

The smaller pitch meant less speed, but more thrust at the same RPM. Great IMO for a trainer. I almost never use more than 3/4 throttle.

South Jersey (or southern NJ if you outsiders prefer) just north of Vineland here. Fly with a club in Salem County on a 1600 acre farm that is open and flat and at the local school yard that is over 100 acres. Club has about as big a variety of interest as you could have with gas/glow,old igintion engines and electric,free flight,control line,pattern,3-D,Old Timers,Sailplanes,helos,rubber,CO2,electric hi-perf,R/C electric electronic combat,warbirds, you name it someome does it.
