Default Guillows Rufe micro zero float

Gonna try to see if I can make it fly, I am using the power plant and brick that go in the Eflite micro Stearman. This kit is over 50 years old now available as a laser cut version. Interestingly enough the kit had the correct rudder and tailcone for the landplane zero but the Rufe has a completely different rudder and taller fin. I am no rivet counter but it needs to have the bigger rudder if for no other reason than to look right and hopefully fly better.

Top photo is the Guillows 3 view, next is the landplane tail bottom is the Rufe tail.

Still not feeling like walking around my Flying field but at least I can build some.

Many seaplanes need more rudder area to counteract the area of the floats in the front of the plane.

Without that the plane may not be stable.

I have watched a lot of YouTubeís of rc Rufes mostly built and flown by Japanese modelers and many of them add a little water rudder on a thin wire extension from the real rudder, often in clear plastic.

Having watched a lot of these you tubes I am not sure I will have the courage to try any water landings or takeoffs, lots of nose over crashes. If it flies at all I will be happy.

I have designed a new taller rudder just by hand based on pictures and the silhouettes in Thorpeís JNAF aircraft book plus looking at my Tamiya 1/48 plastic one I built 25-30 years ago. Also increased the size of the horizontal stab and elevators.

The photos show expansion in size of the elevators and horizontal stab. The fin and rudder have been completely rebuilt as the taller Rufe type and the longer rudder will replace the incorrect landplane tail cone. Also should help it fly. Fuselage formers B-1- B-4 were lightly scribed to come apart more easily, later, at the lateral longeron and notched to accommodate a new extra lingering from B-1 to B-4. Care was taken so that the meeting of the longerons is kept glue free. A copy of the top half of B-4 was made and it is glued to the short extra longeron. My aim here is to be able to have the forward upper fuselage be removable for radio, battery, and motor install later. It should separate ok with a sharp XActo 11 blade.

It's the site Griff, I can't post them either. Reported to IB but instead of getting better, the issue is getting worse.

I need to take some pix had back surgery in May and really haven't flown much but I have been building and the Rufe is coming along, it's covered and the radio and motor are installed of course. I might fly it without the floats first if the CG is ok.

I was trying to use my phone since that's where the photos are. It gave me a much simplified - I guess "mobile" version.... Had no provision for photos. I guess I need to put the photos on my iPad and then use the iPad to do it. The phone used to work...

Hi Chelle, great idea! The Rufe is a popular subject for RC models in Japan and there are a great number of Rufes with especially clear plastic versions of this tacked onto the actual rudder. If it flies and I get brave enough to try water operation, I'll try one!

Finally finished it after ten months. Did the wingtip throttle up and it should fly. I thought the float would counterbalance the radio being aft but I had to add two Sheridan 5mm pellets to the plastic vac form nose cap Guillows supplies. Used a little EZ Bilt pilot.althoygh I photographed it with the rubber spinner that comes with the EFlite prop, it vibrated too much and I had to go without it. I will add a water rudder if I ever get brave enough to try or on H2O.
