Default WW I Markings

I have noticed that an SE-5, for example may have a large letter on the fuselage and upper wing. The letter may be "Z" or "B" or some other letter. Does anyone know what the letter means?

I believe this may be a Squadron Identification letter. Example : H indicates Sqdn 60.
The listing is now hard to find ... and best is to refer to markings of British aeroplanes in WW1 in the definitive book on the subject: British Aviation Squadron Markings of World War 1. by Les Rogers, published by SchifferSchiffers
