hey gang,so here we are early into our 2013 flying season. I've only been to the field 3 weekends in a row and have had 2 crashes resulting in totaled planes.damaged reputation,and of coarse my pride which comes before the fall [or crash's] is hurt.

3 weeks ago my new optic6 transmitter glitched [like the old optic6 had in the fall] and the uproar went spiraling in. i switched out the hobby king assan transmitter module for the stock hitec 2.4 module. this solved the radio issues.

last weekend got only 2 flights in before winds got to much.

today was a great day flying. i got 5 flights in and winds p/u,but ultimately the crash was due to pilot error and loss of orientation and the 42" 3dhs ajslick drilled in behind the flight line. it was away from the pit area but I'm sure to be to topic of discussion during the week for the guys who fly everyday.

now heres my issue regarding planes and hope someone has a good suggestion. i only have larger kit builds to fly now and really need something to fly that I'm not worried about flying aerobatics. i need a new balsa arf thats affordable,can handle 10 to 15+ winds for everyday flying. winds are often higher so the arf needs to be sport flyer[3d] for windy conditions. the uproar was a heavily modified kit build and served well though not what I'd choose going forward.todays arfs are lighter,better for aerobatics,and don't require a lot of build time.they also cost less then all the PC's kits require to complete.

what your favorite sport/3d arf in the 50" ws size that can handle windy days,flys stable,and doesn't cost a fortune.i i still have the airfoils foamy edge and it's to light for the fields typical windy days.[like today]

ready to hit the buy button asap as i really don't have a plane to grow aerobatic skills on in the hanger.

stuart looks like you have your heart set on balsa, but would you consider foam?

I have a Telelink that I have flown in 20 mph wind and it handled it fine. I was even able to knife edge, and do a cool hover with the wind carrying it down wind.

Hi Stu Get yourself a GWS Formosa II, Yea its a foam plane, but you dont have to be SHY of crashing it, They Fly great, are easy to fix, will take a lot of Punishment, and wind, Balsa is Nice, but IMHO, BALSA wont take the abuse foam will, normally if you crash a balsa plane its History, with Foam, you can normally get it back in the air with little repairs, I Like my Foam Planes better than My Balsa Planes LOL for this reason, Take care and have fun, Chellie

The Hanger 9 Twist 40 is another very good model in the 50 inch range. I'm running about 700 watts or so through the Hacker A40-10L motor, using a 6S1P 2300 Mah A123 battery pack, and an APC-E 14 by 7 prop. That could go over 1000 watts, if it were running LiPos. Note that this model does not have a removable canopy to allow access to the battery, without taking the wing off.

That's quite surprising, the model is rated for between 5 and 6 pounds. Mine came in at 5 pounds, one ounce, and that is with six 2.5 ounce A123 cells for power.

Nice thing about A123's, they are built into the model, and charging jacks were made through the side of the fuse.

The model now has seven flights on it, with the last one not to good. I brought in the model for a landing, flying into 15 MPH plus winds per our club anemometer. A 20 MPH gust picked it up, and it went over backwards, and cartwheeled wing tip to wing tip, some 20 feet.

On retrieval of the model, only damage was a bent shaft on the Hacker A40 motor. No other damage to the model anywhere. Guess I was lucky. (Your results could vary!)

I've got new shafts on order from Hacker, but managed to straighten the existing shaft on my 12 inch lathe and dial indicator.

hello NJSwede, i'll take you up on the offer to sell a 41" 3dhs edge. all the slicks componets checked out ok and would fit perfectly. it will also keeps the six new 3cell 2200mah 25c zippies used. i think when the slick hit the ground it was more flat than nose in since the motor is perfect condition and the cowel was smashed on the bottom. i'll pm you and lets get together down your way soon. i'll be looking forward to seeing you again my friend.[thanks for the prayers said]

my reasoning for a 50" balsa is the motor and speed control from the uproar also survived and i have four new 4 cell 4000mah 30c zippies to use in the bird i get.

i installed a hitec rx in the aerocraft skimmer600 sailplane tonight. i built for lazy sunday flights,high slow circles should keep me out of trouble. once i get the chance i'll switch out all those bum assan rxs in my larger kit builds...they also safely fly scale like flights with a little aerobatics involved.

lol!!! that is so true fhhuber!! a visitor who doesn't fly yet was asking tons of questions to everyone and when i walked by him to collect my wreckage he had to depth of mind to say aloud....."you broke it,didn't you".

i must admit to thinking of letting him have a bit of that same but i was more wanting to clean up the slick to the car.

i just want everyone to know my hanger needed thinning out a bit[not to much] and i have way to many flying toys.

i also want everyone to know the stuff with my heart is really nothing extreme and i have every expectation of the shock treatment will set things right...i'm taking it all in stride and not missing a single day out of my job i love to do[maybe a few days]. can't ask for anything more from the good Lord who gave so much long ago and keeps on giving.

Sorry to hear about your stirng of bad luck, but tou know you still have a Stinger 64 and for me that has always been a great stress reliever because it only does 2 things fly well or fly badly either way your pride shall return because when it flies well you will look cool and when it flies badly you still will look cool because the crash will look cool, Just a thought I wish I had some better suggestions for your new plane but and you know as well as I do these Watt flyers know well.
Just remember when your pride is hurt, I always say the glass is not half empy nor is the glass half full. Its a full shot glass! Swig that sucker and lets roll

The TH Razor 3D is a good low cost ($99) pattern/light 3D ARF that comes set up for either electric or gas. Cheap enough that I don't get cold sweats when I think about crashing it.

I bought it to replace my Uproar that I crashed a few weeks ago. Assembly is so easy when you are used to building kits! I had to go bigger with the motor but am using the dead Uproar for the rest of the electronics.

To Chellie's point, the Mosa II is a wonderful bird when modded properly. She made me a really nice set of gear. The plane flies on rails. The kit is only $50.00 from Headsuprc. I dropped a 2820/07 575watt 950KV emax motor in mine. 50 amp esc. She goes pretty much where I point her. Will do F3A maneuvers but its a pattern ship. not a 3d plane. Forget about hovers and poptops. But rollers, tumbles, and everything in between, she'll do. Nice in the wind too !

Another one I saw today was the HK "Money Shot" and the extreme hobby MX. The Moneyshot flew great. So diD the MX. Both are balsa and film covered. About $110.00 for the Money Shot I have a Super Vyper to build yet but am practicing with the Mosa II. Also saw a nice 48" edge 540 that the guy says should be a 3D trainer.
Check out Value Hobby for some good deals. Swede knows where all the good stuff is.

I hit a bench in the pits a couple of weeks ago. Rudder stuck on landing and she rolled head on into a sitting bench. No damage at all. But it shook me up.

ooops! i thought i posted pictures of this....electrifly edge 540t 50"ws. used the esc and motor from the uproar and have 4cell 4000mah 40c zippies. she's going to rocket!! it was to windy to maiden it Saturday.i also am going to change out the emax mg servos for hitec hs 82mg's. the emaxs don't have enough torque for hard aerobatics even though i don't fly 3d,i don't want to cheap out and wreck it. emax torques out at 28oz,the 82 are around 40oz.

i also ordered the superfly after watching a video of a guy flying it into a barb wire fence and the ground ..ect...ect..and it just keeps on flying. a 2200kv bp motor,30amp esc,3cell 1300mah 30c zippy and emax eso8mga servo sitting and waiting for the foam only kit.sure i could search out foam and scratch build a delta. but i still work a 40 hr week and really just want to shoot some florescent paint and fly...like it can be beaten up and hot glued back together.

There's never been a better time to "try" things than today...i flew nitro(.25 to .40 sized stuff) years ago, and was always afraid to push myself to get better for fear of trashing a plane, but now thanks to UMX foam and larger foam aircraft, im doing things i wouldnt even thought of trying because a mistake will seldom cost me an airplane.....in other words to me, its never been cheaper and more possible to get "stupid" with a plane than now!....and the side effect is that it has made me a better model airplane pilot! Ive learned that at least trying new maneuvers(even when they go wrong!) REALLY increases the passion to go fly, and when i LUCK OUT and actually get one right(usually after many attempts) my day is MADE, and i cant wait for the next session!Those who make fun of others misfortunes....well fhhuber, you said it right!!!
