Default How do I pre-heat LiPos for racing?

Hi,

Im thinking of joining the Dutch E-quickie 500 racing league. This is a highly competative league like the Q500, but with e-power. Ive been reading a lot about it and everything is very much restricted, so everyone flies with similar set-ups. What I did notice is that you are allowed to pre-heat the batteries. This is a great help for keeping the max. discharge C up. But how do you pre-heat a LiPo safely?

Cheers,

Hugo

Why not "heat" them to room temp at home and transport them in an insulated "cooler?"

Because I rarely heat my house to 30 - 35C (86 - 95F). And for a full days racing, I will need to recharge on the field (can be 10 packs, including training and finals)(Oh, what do I say, Ill never make the finals, but anyway...)

I read the idea of between the buttocks since the coat pocket is still fairy low in temp, but I do not prefer to carry 3 packs while charging in my a$$. Sorry.

Cheers,

Hugo

Could you use some of the disposable hand warmers and keep them in a cooler?

Heat pads work well if you have AC at the field.

I use an old tube sock filed with uncooked rice. Heat the rice filled sock in the micowave for about a minute. (NOT THE LIPO). I then put the rice bag in the bottom of a Colmen cooler, followed by an old towel with the Lipos on top. The towel keeps the lipos from direct contact with the rice bag. It keeps my batteries warm all morning and ready for use on those cold flying days. It also helps sore joints, muscles and cold hands.

Or, buy one of those coolers that has a peltier device that heats and cools!
