Anyone done one, heard of one or built one ? Something around 70-100" 4 x speed 400 with gearboxes kind of style...

Over on Brand X, there is a Brazilian guy who builds all kinds of seaplanes from white foam and perseverence (I really admire the guy!); if you find some of his threads, he will prove to you that anything is possible including a Sunderland.

Last plan I saw was for a freeflight model with 4 KP00s for power, SO cool.

The Sunderland is one of my all-time favourites. I have a Plaistow poster of NS-Z roaring off on patrol, been hanging over my bnch for years. Imagine my surprise when I went to Hendon and saw NS-Z sitting out front... oh, be still, my beating heart... I must have stood there for 20min, transfixed by the sight.

Hey thanks you for the response !!!!! excuse my stupidity but what and where is Brand X? . If I do find some plans ands start a Sunderland I will be sure to keep you informed if you would like that. !!

[email protected], Ivan Pettigrew, of Chilliwack, B.C., has done the Short Solent for 4 GWS 400 drives at about 100", and 4 x 480s at 120". I believe that the Sunderland could be easily bashed from the Solent plans. You can find these at http://www.geocities.com/ivansplans/ . I watched both of these fly today at the Spring Fly-in, Ivan piloting the large one, and another pilot had the other one up at the same time. Great sight!

Ah. Sorry, I feel it is only courteous not to advertise other, competitive, sites. I realise that both sites cover basically the same material, but I don't know how site owners react to references to their competitors. I probably have it wrong, it may be that there is a cooperative attitude, but I don't know for sure.

I mean the RCGroups site.

Thanks for the offer, Ray, but I have plenty of plans, either in full print, or in my magazine collection. I know of at least 3 iterations of the Sunderland in various scales.

My Sunderland. Four direct-drive 400/7.2.

Sadly, no suitable water hereabouts, so it has to be hand-launched.

First flown ten years ago. Now going better than ever with lipo power.

I remember a picture of a model Sunderland attacking a submarine, I think it was on the front cover of a UK model mag.

The interesting thing about it was the angle of one side of the tailplane, something like 60 degrees.

The picture shot was to be a depth charge attack with the Sunderland just above the submarine, with a small explosive charge in the water. Someone must have fired the charge just too early and a bit too powerful, the column of water hit one side of the Sunderlands tail, knocking it up at the angle.

As far as I can remember the Sunderland continued flying and landed ok.

Any other UK modellers remember it?


Edit - Found the model and a picture, look for the water column and bent tail.

The fire to build a Short seaplane has been rekindled but I'm thinkking Sunderland. I've recently seen a photo of a Catalina in the RN (or is it RAF?) overall dull white with camoflaged topsides. While searching for photos ot that I've come across photos of similarly schemed Sunderlands. I like it. Thinking I'd like to build one. There's a card model kit in 1/33rd scale giving a ws of over 3 feet! The first 3 photos are from a card model site, that's all paper. I'm thinking that it would pretty easily lend itself to Depron construction and small GWS IPS motors.

Peter-- What are the dimensions of your Sunderland? Tried your website but the models index page will not load. (I still plan on doing a Lancaster, possibly this winter time permitting. Thanks for your help on that with regard to airfoils and incidence).

Sorry about the website. My ISP is doing some maintenance.

The model is 43" long. Span is a slightly overscale 62".

Plans should be ready in a few weeks. I'll let you know.

Plans aye? Would I be able to scale them to say, 48" span? I'll get in line for that. There's a lake behind my house and I would'nt mind a bit of nautical activity on a clam morning or eve.

I can hardly wait for your plans Peter. I'm picking up a second hand Multiplex Cargo as the wing is almost a spot on double for the Sunderland/Empire wing shape.
