Exclamation Wake up before you fly ! Oops !

The weather here has just been awful and chances to fly have been limited. I got a call from my neighbor/flying buddy who works nights and he said I am flying when I get home if you want to come, let me know !. So I called him and said I would go and asked him for a wake up call half an hour before he was ready to leave. Five Minuit's before he is ready I get a call saying come on I am all loaded and ready to go. So.... I rush round grab my ef16 and wonder over to his with all the bits I need. By the time we got to the field I was still a bit groggy from sleep and should have given myself a while to wake up properly but I did not = Over did the aileron turned toward the ground full throttle tried to pull out of the dive inverted and hit the ground full throttle !!! Hit the ground with tail and cockpit, Tore both wings off and tail and both aileron mounts have given way. also smashed the cockpit up too. Verdict Pilot error, result smashed my first ducted fan plane, Damage level medium, Special thanks to EPP and UHU POR, She will live horay!!! She is in intensive care right now having a UHU transfusion but should be back in the air soon yay!!!.

Might need a new air frame the taileron carriers took it hard I am going to try a transplant but it does not look good. I wish I could get an air frame only in the uk for this.

I got side tracked with my build some few months back. Anyway I am on it again and just read all 24 pages of this thread. Should I do the tail mod like Grasshopper did on page 10? Pics of my paint coming soon.

Yes, do the tail mod. Even on the stock plane it's necessary. Don't ask how I know. :o

the c/f is optional .. . keep the airframe light. . . it will only last 40 or so flights under the best conditions anyway. then buy another one.

F-16 is just about done. Mounted fan as per the instructions at 1.5" back from where the stock mount is, as I will be using a 3s 2250 lipo, 181 gr. Any tips before I throw her in the air would be appreciated. This is my first EDF and I am not quite sure how to set my DX6i. Anyone else using a DX6i? How did you set it?

Thanks

Alex

make sure the balance is correct. the wrong c/g WILL KILL the plane!! balance it as per the instructions!! the launch toss should be full throttle, and at a slightly upward angle, into the wind.

Here is where she's at right now. Needs a lil' touch up in the front where the gray over spray occurred. Need a lil' gray on the underside pylon. You can see my pylon mod here too. Lightweight 3/32 basswood secured with epoxy. Decals on the way.

alex,
set the tailerons up so neutral is with the front edge of the tails even with the bottom of the pylon. this looks like you have up elevator set in but its not... this will make your first hand launches easier. i fly mine on a dx5e. no frills but a good solid radio. also a pic of my tail mod.

alex,
remember, fly this bird smoothly. . no abrupt movements on the sticks, carve your turns wide and flat. and don't be afraid to fly half throttle, this bird can fly very slowly. almost high alpha if you manage throttle and elevator well enough. also she handles 10 mph or higher winds very well, in fact better than alot of much higher priced e.d.f. jets do. Also when landing, just a split second before touchdown, release the up elevator or the tailerons will catch in the grass or weeds and rip off. (ask me how i know that) otherwise just enjoy the whine of the fan buzzing by at 80 or so mph!!!!!

Before you "toss" it you might want to read this:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=35

It is a procedural fix for the taileron operation known to give problems in a DX6i. The "programmed" flaperon and taileron sekections in the DX6i functions menu are NOT programmed correctly and give more throw one way than the other causing goofy taileron action in some cases. A lot of people just deal with it but it is serious and CAN be corrected following the simple setup this guy suggests. There is quite a thread on this over on the "other" forum. Good reading but the link above is to the fix. Try the fix and see if it is better than the pre-programmed selection for YOU. I found quite a difference with mine and will never use the pre-programmed taileron selection in the DX6i again but like I said everybody is different and you may be happy with it the way it is.

Just a suggestion.

Also before the first flight the tailerons should be set with a bit of "UP" to them as it is far easier to put down elevator in to stop a climb than it is to try to put a lot of up in to stop a dive especially at low speed and no altitude launches!! LOL!! I don'r mind ask me how I know!!

Thanks hillbille and thanks timocharis, that helped tons. Anyone using a DX6i, here is the info hillbille directed me to,written by screen name timocharis or Dave:
It is slightly complicated but just take your time and follow along, it worked perfect for me and I can now control the amount of travel and they are balanced!!!!.

Fix For Elevon Routines with DX6i

Found a fix for the Elevon problems (fixes them all, I think).

This is slightly complicated, but bear with me. In the end, you get everything working plus a bonus feature at the cost of only one mix.

First, plug your right servo into the aileron plug and your left servo into Aux 1 (the Flap plug). I've only tried this on one plane, so I don't know if those might be reversed in some setups.

Then set your Wing Type to Dual Ailerons. Now check your aileron control -- it should work normally for an elevon plane (elevator is not yet working). If it doesn't, you'll probably end up having to reverse your plugs to make things work right.

Next, go to Mix 1 and set Elev -> Flap with both rates (D & U) at 100%. In my case that was -100%, but you may have to use +100 percent in your setup. Check function; at this point it should look like an Elevon plane with a boatload of travel. Don't fret about that -- the extra travel will "fix" your trim buttons! And don't forget to set "Trim" to ACT in the lower right corner of this screen.

Now, if you want differential it should work perfectly. If it goes in the wrong direction, you'll have to back up and reverse the plugs (move the servo in Ail to Aux and vice-versa) and redo the other settings to reverse them. Ultimately it means you'll have all the function back at the cost of a single mix.

But you get some payback for that mix: your Flap switch will now work! Probably the best use for it on an elevon plane is adjusting the elevons to max glide duration in case you want to do some thermals and don't want to try and see what the little bugger is doing at 400 feet...

Undoubtedly your elevon travel will now be too great. If you go to Dual Rates and reduce your top rate down at least to 80% of full, your trim buttons will now be completely safe to use -- the endpoint travel will not be greater than your allowed travel, so the weird "button effects" go away.

As far as I can tell, this is a complete fix. Would be delighted to hear if anyone hits a snag... also this leaves the option of another mix open (if you're using rudder and want a mix, or wish to do a throttle -> "flap" mix to get the torque roll out, for example).

Here is the thread if anyone wants to read it: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=940867

Just wanted to say thanks all of you that have helped me with my 1st EDF plane. Here she is with paint complete, everything installed and working perfectly. She is stock, but I figure a great starting point for me. I went with bright colors so my 51 year old eyes can see it in the sky, and I have always liked invasion stripes. Taileron pylons are reinforced, right taileron leading edge is set at the lower edge of the pylon with the left taileron is 1/8" higher, as was suggested. I am expecting a custom tail decal to arrive shortly, but here she is done minus the tail art.
