Default EDF Contest in Los Angeles!

Whats up everyone!

My names Darryl,

I wanted to let you guys know.

We are planning to have a contest for EDF planes pretty soon. The winner will be awarded $1000 and there are also cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd as well. Food will be provided and is free for anyone attending/participating in the event. This is all just a plan at the moment, but I just wanted to know what you guys think about a contest like this?
Feel free to leave a msg here or email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Darryl,

Where in LA do you plan to hold this event? Apollo?

Right now, we are not sure of the location or if it will even be in LA. We are trying to get a feel of the level of interest in an event like this before we decide what the budget/location will be. But we do have some flying clubs that are ready to go.

How about some details of what you're thinking about for judging. Is this going to be a Top Gun type contest? Speed contest?

Kinda hard to gauge participation without any details.

We are currently looking for a field, we will have up to 5 teams probably about 3ppl per team. We will provide the EDF kits for the contestants, once sign ups are done.

As for judging, I am not a pilot. So we are also paying 3-4 pilots $100 to judge the contest, I think we will work out which areas to judge as soon as we hire the judges. Do you have any suggestions?

Off hand I can think of 5 or 6 good EDF pilots in the LA area. But I'd prefer to send them a link to this thread and let them chime in on their own. I don't want to speak for anyone.

And now the big question: Is there going to be an entry fee?

That would be great man, as for the entry fee...we are still debating on how this will work. We may ask for a $20 (a little more or less) entry fee when you come to our office to pick up your kit, but that is still not planned out yet, we might also just make it a deposit instead, so after the contest you can have your money back. The only reason for that is because we do not want to supply "participants" with a free kit if they end up flaking out.

Actually, I believe we will do a deposit system. You will need to put down a deposit on 1/2 the cost of the plane when you pick it up. You will get it back after the competition, win or lose.

That sounds good, I have been reading that the Apollo field is now shut down. I'm waiting on a few quotes, on a couple locations right now. But anyone who wants to participate, please email me at [email protected] . Must be teams of 3, and I will get back to you with more info.

Thank you

I haven't heard anything about Apollo Field being shut down... but the quickest way to find out is email the club that flys there...

The Valley Flyers are probably gonna participate as well, I have spoken with there president. However, we are looking into a flying field out in Norco...which is by Riverside/Ontario I guess. They are offering a decent price and are negotiable.

We are doing signups really soon. Even if you do not make it onto the competition, don't miss this event! Free food, raffles and great people!

Norman, the sales manager is a good friend of mine for many years now).
I've flown many Jets from Nitroplanes before @ Airshows. I'd definitely recomend Steven Kight for this spot! He's uptodate with his info and is a good all around pilot. I've sugested him before to Tommy Chen few months ago for a video review job.

Back to other matters...

Any idea on how this event is going to be conducted? is it going to be a competition for fastest Jet? or something different?

Yeah kinda vague about what's the contest. If the prize is $1000 maybe the contest is who can pull $1001. dollars out of their wallet fastest.

That's kinda what I thought. The whole thing sounds like a sales gimmick to me.
But HobbyPartz is big business. You wouldn't think such tactics would be necessary. I'm sure their sales are plenty good.
