Default RCPowers and FRCFoamies - Mossie and Lancaster

Normally I do not pay for plans ... yes I'm a cheapskate !! My usual haunts are Hippocket and so on ... where thousands of plans have ended up.

But as many know - I have a particular love affair with two aircraft : Dh Mosquito and the Avro Lancaster.

Free plans for these are there - but all full fuselage and require a reasonable length of time and skill to build. Always on the lookout for simpler versions - I caught that RCPowers (under new 'management') had basically folded foam plan versions. The Lancaster having been shown in a recent UK RCM&E magazine. The Lancaster flying well on 2S and prop hanging !! on a 3S ..

I HAD to have some of this !!

So Paypal and both Mossie and Lanc are now on my hard-drive. Once I get started on them - I will post up the builds as they progress ...

I have to confess - folded foam I have not done before ...

The build is coming on of the Mossie ... my workspace is like a bombsite !! so excuse the mess !! Stuck for space until I get workshop done.

Ok ... basic fuselage as a flat plate and then spine and formers added ... wing is half sections glued to the flat plate fuselage. Imagine a profile model - then formers added ...

The engine pods 'nacelles' are created by using a spine and then 'folded' foam casing.

The same folded foam system will be used for the fuselage shell.

The folded system of course leaves the 'trenches' where foam is cut and folded ... so i will be looking at ways to fill without adding weight. I may cover the model with lightweight Nysilk with PVA ...

Wing ... best way to describe that ... again flat plate base .. with what is similar to a KM layer but folded and raised by a spar to create an aerofoil form.

Motors are to be the Turnigy L2210 1400kv bell motors with 7x4 3 bladers ... 30A ESC and 2S lipo with 3S on standby in case needed !
Retracts will be fitted of course ... the small 33x25mm Hobby King set that are sane as used in the HK Lancaster. Shame that I cannot get the Lancaster plastic legs to add to the metal rod ...

Interesting build ...

Well it all goes together !!

Wing spar etc.

Fitting folded fuselage shell

Starting to fit gear

Because I am waiting ESC's and motors ... I cannot glue on top wing panels yet.

back end controls

Yes - I have fitted retracts

Wing panels laid on to rough out the paint scheme ...

Plans indicate 8x4 3 bladers but eCalc shows that 6x4 3 bladers are more than enough to get this baby going on 1400kv .. and 3S

One panel in place now that ESC's arrived and I already had one motor (2210 Bell motor 1400kv)

Once other motor arrives and wing panel fitted ... the folds will be filled and final painting done. With an overall matt varnish to complete before decals applied.

Really looking fwd to this !!
