Default 150-170cc giant conversion

G'day, I am Ben from Australia and this is my first post on your website.

I joined this site to gain some insight into the world of E power.

I currently fly giant scale 40% 'gas' powered models in Unlimited IMAC over here in Australia.

I have a new 120inch QQ Yak 54 on its way and am thinking of doing an E-power conversion.

I understand that there is a large cost in doing this conversion, so please no negative posts regarding the price of conversion.

I want to look at doing the conversion with a Hacker A200 and appropriate speed controller. My main question is what cell count and capacity will I require to power this motor, considering the model will weigh in vicinity of 44 pounds.

The Hacker website says 14s and 12000mAh's but then the speedy specs talk about 15s for the same capacity.

Is anyone using A123 batteries in giant scale applications or are Li-po's still the better choice for such an application?

Any insight and help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers from Australia
Ben.

Welcome to WF Ben! I noticed that you didn't get an answer in the beginners forum so I moved your thread to the Giants forum. Hope some folks here will take care of you!

Thankyou Don, well I have done a little research and it looks like I would need 15s and about 12000mAh to power the A200.

Next question, where do I get 6000mAh packs?

I have found some 5s 5000mAh packs but if I ran 3p (ie 9 5 s packs in total) I would have a whole lot extra weight and if I ran 2p (6 5s packs) I would only have 10000mAh, will 10000 be enough?

The packs I am looking at are Zippy R's, they are Korean and 1/3 of the price of 'big name' brands. A few mates of mine hav ebeen using them in 50 size helis and havnt got them to puff even with much abuse.

I am willing to experiment.

I don't know about the 6000's but I plan on using the ZippyR 5000's in a 10S2P configuration on my Corsair I'm building (approx 30lbs). I will also be using the CC HV110 amp ESC's. With the motor being an AXI 5330 Double. I've found during this build that with Giant scale you have to do a whole lot of research on your own to find what you need. And also to have a lot of custom work done. Luckily I can do my own electronics and also machine work for some of the parts. I did notice that some of the battery manufactures also say to contact them for special applications. It's possible you could get them to discount you for advertising their packs...making them as inexpensive as the Zippy's. Just a thought.

Yeah I was thinking of the Zippy R's.

Do you know of any other seller of them?
I know of www.unitedhobbies.com

Theyre website is a little confusing, I cant find the Zippy R's in 5000mAh. They have a zippy H or something.

Hi Ben and Welcome to Wattflyers, I think I would go with the Lipos on your plane, your going to need a lot of A123 cells, and they get heavy quick, I still think lipos are a better choice than the A123 cells, OH OH, I just Opened up a BIG Can OF WORMs, and with the Zippy lipos, you cant beat the prices, Ok Now You will get a LOT of Info on A123 Cells and Lipos, I just Started a Battery WAR Take care, Chellie

Lol! Battery wars? Is that like the stupid 3W vs DA thing?

Cause I have a 3W!!

Looks like its pretty doable price wise using the zippy R's. the highest capacity Zippy R pack I can find is 4150mAh. I would need 3p to get the 12000mAh that is recommended by hacker. Thats going to be a lot of weight!!

I have a 35% SD Yak 54 sitting in my garage, perhaps it might be an easier conversion to do, it has a lot of wing for a 35%er and I would be able to use the A150 with 14s ..... hmmmmmm I still like the idea of the 40%er better, just need to look at how to save weight.

Can you tell I am thinking out loud

I'm guessing we won't see any pictures since he hasn't logged on for almost 3 years now.
