Anyone know of kits or plans for the Whale? I am going to start a collection of flying models of all of my old squadron aircraft, and the Whale popped my cherry as an Airframer.....

There is a download of the planes manual online at the A3 users group if you want to take the time. Can't remember the link now but they went to a pay site, and I left it then. But you can still visit it and download pix and stuff.

Hell, they are big, leaky, cantankerous PITA's. There's a reason, that you probably saw, that we called them "All 3 Dead".
But....I was one of the last...ended up working on the crew that restored the one at NAS Key West. Now stuck in the Strike Fighter community!

John,
The one I was familiar with was from VQ-2 stationed in Japan. I'm trying to remember which ship I was on at the time but I think it was the Saratoga...I pulled duty on 5 different carriers back in the day (mid to late 60's) so I can't really place it. We worked together with them in the AMD shop and they shared quarters with us. When we heard they were MIA it hit us all in our VAW squadron. They were quite "spooky" and wore no squadron or ships insignia but I'm sure you know all of that and a lot more.

My plane was at cubie for repairs and on the return to the Hawk, some how all the radars and guidance systems failed, and they ended up over a Chinese Island getting shot down. Reports said they were bombing. Which I found a little hard to figure as our planes were all KA-3s tanker versions and didn't carry much ord.

I'm now working on A3D plans for a future scratchbuild (after the Stratojet and 2 other jets i'm building). May be you'll be interested in this project...
She'll be out of 3mm Depron and 43" ws. Twin EDF 40 or 50 and feigao brushless motors.
Here are 2 links to threads about USN jets i draw and built :

Philippe, yes I would be interested in the project! I was with VAQ-33 from 1991 until it decommissioned in 1993; left the base in 1994. We had TA-3's, KA-3's, and ERA-3D's, as well as a smattering of other aircraft, such as the EA-6A (no, that's not a typo, either!) and EA-7L's.

Hi Tom,
I started on the B47 build, but very slowly, with little things...
And i'll leave the house for ten days (spring vacations) next week end
. I also had to maiden the Mirage F1 (great fast jetpusher -i'm wondering about an Alfafan Jetscreamer version-) and Saab Tunnan (lot of unsolved problems with this one...?? ) So i can't start the Stratojet thread yet, but i promise i'll do it as soon as i'll have some interesting things to show here and, in the same time, on RCG !
In the other hand, i still have to bring the F8, Super Etendard and enlarged version of the TA 183 Huckebein plans to the copyshop for scan before sending them to you for your website... Just a little bit more patience, i know i'm very late, compared to my promises... I'm now very enthusiastic about drawing and building new Parkjets !

Just some specs before starting on the construction :
My Whale will be 1350 mm (53,14") WS and 1370 mm (53,9") L. I'll use a pair of microfans with razor 300 motors. Nacelles will be 305 mm (12") L , 40 mm (2,75") large and 80 mm (3,14") high without pylons. I think the final weight will be around 1000-1200 grams (34-41 oz), or lighter if possible, so she'll be a nice flyer. All the airframe will be from 3 and 6 mm Depron with thin plywood and balsa reinforcements. I'm ready to start on the construction, but i still need the right-and light-and no-expensive retracts...
... And there'll be a buildthread, of course !

John you didn't tell me you were on the Kitty Hawk. My bro-in law was on it when the apollo 11 crew was recovered. GGRN if this helps get you motivated here's my Squadron of Navy parkjets. And a micro Corsair
#23

It's not a question of motivation, but a question of time... I've several irons in fire in the same time...
Here are some of my scratchbuilt navy jets (f8 Crusader, A4 Skyhawk, Super Etendard and Rafale M). I also have a S3 A, but it's more a trainer looking like a Viking than a scale-looking model. I can provide TIF files for the A4, Super Etendard, Rafale M and S3A viking...
I'm working on a kit of the F8 Crusader (it'll be available in the early 2009), if it works, i think i'll do the same with the A3D...

I watched some of the Scooter build and she turned out Great. I was just hoping that the A-3 would be started. Oh well I guess The world will have to wait. When you do get it done don't forget to go over to the A-3-d home page and let them guys know about it.
