Default HiMax + GWS 400 Gearbox

I keep playing with the idea of mounting my HiMax 2025-4200 in a GWS gearbox I have lying around with G gearing (4.5:1). I have everything to do it except the 16T 2mm pinion.

The ideas that keep popping up are the GWS gears are cheaper, wider and the shaft is 4mm. I'm bending props on seemingly soft grass landings. Probably the carbon prop I've been flying with. Also stripped a gear on take off a couple days ago. Then there's the set screws, noise and limited gear ratios.

I know I should just order a Cobri but there's a part of me that needs instant gratification and I have most of the parts on hand.

I had a Himax 2015 in a GWS gearbox; it worked just fine. Check out the overstock sales at bphobbies.com. They have quite a few GWS spurs and pinions pretty cheap, so you can load up on spares or inexpensively experiment with all the different gear ratios GWS produces.

Thanks. I've seen somebody mention running one with 220w.
Right about where I estimate I'll be.
The plan is to cut the threaded shaft to fit a 4mm MpJet collet.
Use an E-Flite adapter and a EDF heatsink that appears to have an "spacer ring".

Without measuring the GWS gear looks 50% larger than the HiMax.
I haven't decided on a ratio yet but the 3.90:1 is calling.

I finally finished this project and flew it.
I was told on another forum awhile ago not to use a "cheap gearbox".
The moment I powered it up I considered the GWS 400 above the HiMax. it's Smoother and has much less noise.

  • GWS 400c Gearbox
  • Replaced bushings with bearings.
  • Cut shaft to mount:
    • MpJet 4mm collet adapter
    • APC 9x6e Prop
  • Max Products "EDF" heatsink
  • Maxx Products 20mm to 370 adapter
  • GWS F spur gear (7o tooth, m.4 pitch)
  • E-Flite Pinion Gear (18 tooth, m.4, 2mm)
The HiMax motor has 3 sets of mounting holes. After trial fitting with one set I decided to changed holes to move the wire. This changed the gear mesh. I haven't measured but can anybody confirm this is some kind of adjustment?

So I'm back to working on this.
I bought another "housing" and the motor mounts on an angle no matter what so I bought a bphobbies metal box.

I just need a Cobri non-threaded shaft to complete it.
Anybody know if they sell them separate? The word shaft is on their site "hidden", under the shims, but no ordering info.
