Default Ivrc Sunday (Pics and Vid)

Today was just plain HOT at the field. We scored 100 degrees with 98 percent humidity...and to be completely straight, everyone seemed to be having more fun sitting under their canopies sipping cold beverages and spinning stories; its was a good ol fashioned country affair in every sense of the phrase.

The flying was done in bursts, with flyers quickly returning to the shade as a 20 mile an hour hot wind from the southwest reminded us that it was indeed, July in the Ohio Valley.

IVRC Sunday began for me at 7:10 when the sound of Randy's cell phone on the steps outside my room awakened me from a night that can only be described as fantastic. The organizers of IVRC 2007 moved the evening festivities of Saturday to the 'BeerGarden' in downtown Lasalle; about 15 minutes from the field. There was a live band and fermented beverages everywhere...this was a party...and these people know how to do it...

I was standing around and there was a constant stream of IVRC staff tapping me on the shoulder, welcoming me to the 'after party'. The band was awesome and played nothing but party favorites...and more than a few times, I was yanked to the dance floor by an Ohio-Native...sometimes, this is the best part of RC. We work our tails off during the day...but at night, when work is done...its time to refuel. Next year, you will SEE what I mean...ya don't want to miss IVRC/Beer-Garden...its the after party to attend in the midwest.

Now with it being Sunday and the distant echo of 80's classic hits still ringing in my head, it was time to throw down on the last day of IVRC 2007. ...and sir, the turnout for this first time event was darn good...even with the heat, I still met and talked to people from Iowa, Chicago, and all over the greater valley area.

The noon demo had a surprise....TEAM JR SHOWED UP!!!!!!! Yep! I rubbed my eyes and there stood Danny Snyder with his custom designed Yak...rolling out to the flight line. The winds were now at a solid hot 20 miles an hour...and Danny took the sticks of his brainchild for very nice 3D/Pattern demo.

When he landed, I walked up to him, stuck out my hand, and said "Nice flight, brother"....he stuck his hand out, grabbed mine, shook with a firm grip and said "Thanks a lot for having us out, I appreciate it."

After his official demo, Danny stuck around most of the day, flying on command whenever someone asked to see him fly. He answered questions about his plane, took time for photos, and catered to the annoyances we 'media types' sometimes bring with all of the footage/info we need for a piece...Which brings me to a note I would like to make:

....being a pro goes beyond good flying...its about being good people...its about being humble...its knowing that you are blessed to be able to do what you love and to have people who want to see you work your craft. Danny Snyder and Gary Seeloff BOTH get this concept.

Both Gary and Danny typify the phrase 'being professional'. For that, my animal hat if off to BOTH of them and all of the pro-pilots worldwide who share this understanding. Mike Tyson made a billion dollars and was heavyweight champ at one time...and he lost it all...Wayne Gretzky made a billion dollars, too...but when Wayne's hockey career ended, he wound up with statues erected in his honor, and roadside banners with his face on them sporting words like 'grace' and 'leadership'. Don't ever change guys...ever!

IVRC itself is much like the aforementioned personal anecdote: its all about good people. I dig this vibe they are putting down and will definitely put IVRC 2008 on the calendar. ...Down home guys who love to fly...and love people just as much.

Today, at IVRC marked the entrance of the Electrics. Lipos were charging, deltas were flying, Funjets were in the air, EDF's could be heard screaming along...and all in tandem with the traditional fuel flyers. It was a perfect Sunday!!!!

Default take it in stride, brother

Andy Gaylord has a sunny disposition despite obvious events in the field. Unfortuantely, were were not able to reach his Katana until the Children of the Corn and the 'One who lies beyond the rows' had their way with the plane...

Today was great!! I arrived at 9 AM with a couple of guys that I fly with on Sunday mornings [Raynet11 and Rich S]. We hooked up with Randy and Chuck D, we flew, joked around and just had a great time in spite of the 95 degree temps. Randy's club really had a nice event. There was plenty of food and water/pop to keep our fluids levels up. I don't even know how many bottles of water I had but I was sweating soooo much I didn't pee all day long!!! LOL!! Everyone there was so nice!! What a great group of flyers.

The winds were pretty strong, but that didn't stop anybody from flying. My V-Diamond flew good but the landing was tuff. My Fun Jet was another story. The trims were off however and I got 2 good flights in with her but I wish I would have had time to get her sorted out better before the Fun Fly. I had put this FJ together last night and didn't have any time to do any trimming flights. Upon the first launch I had to put full up elevator trim into her and it still wanted to dive. I landed and made an adjustment and it wasn't much better. Launch #2 ended up with me doing the walk of shame. The 2nd flight was a bit better but the FJ just didn't feel dialed in.

I won a bunch of stuff in the pilots raffel, 2 hats, 1 Polo shirt, 3S 1100Mah poly RC lipo and a video. I walked out there with so much stuff....I felt like firemanbill loaned me his lucky horseshoe. Well actually Chuck won the video and gave it to me, thanks Chuck!! I had a great time!! I will be attending next year!!

A big thanks again to Randy and his club!!

Pilot #21 here...We are on the road in the motorhome and noticed this event in Wattflyer late last week. Attended for the entire two days and had a wonderful time :-) The demo flights were just amazing. Even Dear Wife had a good time for both days. Never got tired of watching Andy "mow the grass" with his flying Deere!

I only have a Slow Stick with me and it was windy to gale strength in Slow Stick terms; I was disappointed I couldn't fly (otherwise I would have to chase the plane to Wisconsin.)

Joe did a really good job of announcing with his enthusiastic and high energy level personality. Having worked at and been chairman of several and various events over the years I fully appreciate how much work it is to plan, organize and control a happening. Without hesitation I can say, "Well Done." You have a great club, Howie!!

It was great fun to have my #21 called many times for the pilot drawing. Hmmm, what do I do now with TWO aluminum cases... never mind, I'll figure out something. Maybe a good excuse to buy a couple of pistols (the cases are marketed as pistol cases.)

I had a blast , it was very cool to meet everyone in person and to see those monster sized planes. Great event, everyone was so nice , I will certainly make this a tradition to attend this event from here on out. Hat's off to Chuck for the fantastic coverage, it was a blast to not only meet the legendary DIALED\CHUCK but to get some Funjet flying in , well now that was a treat.

P.S. Nice snapshot of the Funjet launch , I'm glad I didn't throw like a girl on that one.. lol.

Andy,

I normally don't like to pick favorites...but dude, I will be back out just to hang out next time; maybe in the fall.

I am lucky enough to be able to see great pilots often...and you are one of em. I have never seen a flying lawnmower go as fast as yours....I ran a doppler on one pass from the raw video file I shot of your entire flight while I was sitting in O'Hare. 81mph!!!! YEP...thats a fast lawn mower! ...Im sure your dives got even faster.

Sorry about the Katana...had to do it ; you handled it like a pro, though. ....All smiles and laughs.

All of the guys in your club are great pilots (at least the ones I saw fly)...actually, you are all some of the sickest nut-jobs I have ever seen. Hovering 2 feet off the deck with a 3000+ dollar plane, doing hover-drops into their own smoke clouds...IT WAS A SHOW...A REAL SHOW.

I was suprised at how many people from the community showed up, too...sitting in lawn chairs just watching...that kind of stuff does OODLES for growing the sport. You guys did it right by inviting schools and local organizations...THAT is MARKETING. The industry owes you all an
'atta-boy'; so many times RC only tries to market within the industry...and you guys went 'outside' to bring em in....way cool!

Ray, Crash, Joe, and everyone else....

Guys, it was awesome to finally meet. Crash...its been 4 years in the making...I was upset I did not win a dog whistle, though. (Inside joke everyone).... "Hey, this whistle's broken...I can't hear it!"

Ray, Im glad you don't look like the avitar...and it WAS great to rail some passes with you guys. Nothing like getting a bunch of speed freaks in the air...the dude with the Extra had stones of steel to go up during our circuit....it looked like a seagull flying the shore-line with a bunch of coked-out falcons. LOL!

gotta get back to work on some stuff....back on later today.
