San Diego Pylon Racing

SEFSD has started a new fun class for pylon racing. Mini Ultra Stick!
We will race tomorrow (yes short notice) but I'll put the next races in the calendar and post the racing in the events section.
I'll be there, I just got my MUS today.
Check it out!

Oh yeah I had a hoot!
We actually did 2, 'sessions' of racing, making up for last months rain.
In my main event, I WON!! I had the smallest motor, the wrong prop, but I held a great line and finished first in my main event.
I did a quick maiden flight to check trims, and within 10 minutes, WAS RACING!
Super fun.

This weekends racing was met with some really blustery winds, and grey clouds.
Visibility was low, winds high, and skills tested.
After two rounds of heat racing, the wind got stronger, and rain drops started falling.
It was determined that this months "Main Events" will be run first next month, before the heat races.
Easter Weekend, on Saturday, at Miramar MCAS field will be where we race next month.
Be ready, with a Main event first, its going to be an interestng program!

From watching the vid it looks like one of the hardest parts of racing is timing the start of the race.Too early & im sure theres a big penalty.Too late & you are left in the dust...

Nitro how many guys do they have to keep track of the planes and the laps that are made. I couldn't imagine one person doing this and then having to decide who is in what place. Seems impossible to keep track of.
That looks like a lot of fun to do, and plenty of skill involved to make the turns just right so as not to lose your speed.
Congrat's on your position lot of skill involved on your part.

Good questions/comments guys. Yeah, the start can make it or break it. We use a caller for each pilot who calls his laps, and we have turn marshall's posted out with a safe view of the pylons, to mark any cuts.

I would think with the technology today that this wouldnt be too difficult or expensive to use

but then again I could be way off

This is a slowed down enhanced version of the final heat. I like it because you can see the competition bounce in and out of the field of view.

We just got July's race results in...
I've widened my margin slightly, my XPS packs are still kicking so darn hard its scary, where some of the other guys with Nano packs are seeing themselves slow down after a couple of months of racing.
RACING TOMORROW!!!

Heres the T-28 sheet, so Otto can see his results too...(he had the most points that day with the Trojans)

Thought you all might enjoy some pictures from indoor pylon racing last Wednesday (from the SEFSD newsletter). The Embers dominated the Ember/Vapor class and the Polecats (sp?) dominated the unlimited. Some great flying talent and several mid-airs, generally around the pylon locations. The T-28 seem to hold its own with the Polecats but the P-51 appeared to be slower. Good time had by all.

Oh, the HORROR, the HORROR.....
Im sure some photos will show, and maybe Otto has a video, but we had more carnage today than any other race day this season.
On a start with Mini Ultra Stick, two tangled and went in, that left two for racing... after the last lap the leader lost power and went in. 3 of 4 racers OUT of racing!
During a T-28 event, one went in, and within 30 seconds, we had a small fire to put out.
During the Mini Stick Main, there was bumpin and grinding going on, my caller Bob, had no less than 2 bumps and a prop bite, but he still kept flying and finished in in second, and the leader had a cut, so he won.
For me, I finished first in my main event and got my points, and got out unscathed. Not hits, no dings no trouble. I got 2nd place in both my qualifiers, mainly due to just twitchy flying. I didnt get my groove on until the main event, but when I did, I was on a rope.
Probably have to wait a full month for point scores, but I'm feelin good about my lead.
There are 2 races left. August and September. I gotta at least get to the A Main and finish someplace on the podium to seal the championship.

Hi all. Airborne video from the T-28 heats I flew in today. Larry's crash is right in the center of the field of view. I slowed it down on the playback.
