Default ESC connecting to HV receiver

Hi there,

I have a problem Im hoping someone can help me with.
I have a Futaba HV receiver that is running straight on 8.4v, powering Hitec 7955's, but when I connected up my Hacker 99 opto spin (no BEC) the motor ran for a while, then a loud 'crack' and now wont run.

Did the high voltage from the receiver blow this? What should I do to stop it happening again?

A friend told me that I should have disconnected the middle wire, so no current, only signal would pass through, since it douesnt have a bec anyway?

Any help or advice appreciated.
