nnChipmunk v2 Plans
DETAILS
Hi friends.
This is my first thread here on wattflyer! I've been designing planes for a few years now and wanted to share my latest one with you. The original nnChipmunk was my favorite plane to fly, hands down. This is a sentiment that many other people shared with me as well over email, on forums, and in person. To me, it was the triumphant design that stood tall above the rest. Every time I took it to the field someone would be amazed to learn that it was made from simple dollar foam. The nnChipmunk v1 bridged the gap between "oh that's a scratch build? Yeah.. I could tell" and "Wait, you made that? That plane is cooler than my store bought!" Even though it's not my most flashy, popular, or best looking design, it is still my favorite.
New features in v2:
HATCH
-Updated version of nnP-39 style hatch
v3 SPEEDWING
-New custom airfoil that's SLICK (no FT style 'steps')
-More streamlined version of a clark y airfoil
-All planes I release with the v3 speedwing will have the same airfoil
-Easier to build
NEW BASIC WING
-Same airfoil as v3 speedwing
-Thinner profile
-Basswood spar
-Can handle 500w of power vs 350w on normal FT style basic wing
TAIL FEATHERS
-Double layer foam
-Added airfoil
CANOPY
-Added canadian canopy (featured)
-New 'framing' technique
GENERAL
-Wing notches to fuse cleanly
-Fuse length slightly reduced to allow for kit creation
-FT power pod and new nerdnic pod compatible
If you like this design then perhaps you’ll like some of my others as well.

FAQ
Is the v2 a swappable?
It will accept a FT power pod as well as a new pod I have designed. The new pod is larger to accommodate a bigger battery.
Is this a good plane for a beginner to fly?
No. The nnChipmunk v2 is a bit too advanced for a beginner.
Can I build the basic wing without the basswood spar?
I would not suggest this. The basic wing is much more advanced than a standard FT style fold over wing. Some of these improvements create weak areas that need to be reinforced.
Can I build the speedwing with no aluminum?
No.
How come no flaps?
After testing the plane thoroughly I am confident it simply doesn't need them.
There is a plane I want you to design, what’s the best way to suggest it to you?
Please use the request form here on my site.

Some pretty nice ideas.......a few questions:
Noticed plans do not provide an obvious graphic scale....is that by design or left up to the prospective builder to figure out....?
Noticed plans did not provide a parts (materials) or quantity break down....is that by design or left up to the prospective builder to figure out...?
Since you have an established website that suggests "donations", do the plan sets require a "fee" in order to provide a more complete and user friendly template for the advertised "beginner" builder.....?
Are the plan downloads just PDF or can they be digitized in a CADD type format.........where scale can be formatted to a specific "real time" template.......or is there a fee for that as well.....?
Do you have copyright issues that the prospective builder should be aware of........?
Other than that, your material is very clean and standard print (8.5"x11") friendly.......Just printed one of the PDF's........!
If this is a "for profit" endeavor......I'd suggest you advertise in a manner that is more conducive to a more transparent media format.....like placing the spam in the "for sale" section of this forum.........Thanks for sharing here at WattFlyer and RCG.......

Glad you liked the v2 enough to print the plans! Please keep me updated on your build. There are no strings attached with anything I offer but I wanted to address your questions specifically below.
- I am not for profit. All my plans, build videos, etc are offered for free since I started developing foam RC planes 2 years ago.
- I don't offer any for pay services. I am investing into the ability to make build kits available for those that might want to buy a kit vs full scratch building. But this isn't a primary focus and doesn't change my plans, video, etc from being free.
- The donation option is voluntary and there are no obligation stated, implied, requested, undertones, etc etc. No strings.
- The absence of a scale is my mistake, I'll get that added soon.
- The absence of materials was on purpose though they could be added. I list materials on my site and in the original forum post.
- The absence of general notes in the plans is also on purpose as I have included a 2 hour instructional build video to accompany the plans.
- This actually isn't advertised as a beginner plane. If you saw this detail somewhere about the v2 please point me in the right direction and I will update it.
- Some of my plans are in vector format and others are in raster. If they are vector they would work with a CAD program as is. I have provided different format plans by request in the past but I won't be making DXF files available as a standard. If the file format was a simple conversion that would be no problem but it's more complicated and takes a bit of time to tweak.
- The plans are designed around being printed from a house printer on 8.5x11 paper. Plans that aren't print friendly are my pet peeve. ( I am a scratch builder too

- I have no copyrights
Thanks for asking these questions. I'm new around here and I can understand why some might think me offering high quality designs with instructional build videos wouldn't be giving things away for free. But I'm just a hobbyist that enjoys the development and production side of RC as much as actually flying :-)

Thank You nerdnic for the clarification.........I probably don't need to mention how many "free" plans we see here, that end up being otherwise down the road......!
I completely understand the hassle converting workable digital drawings to a DXF downloadable format.....By profession, I'm retiring soon as a QA/QC civil engineering project manager.........my world for the last 25yrs has rotated around the review and critique of design and constructability profile.......CADD, Inroads and Micro Station have been my "bread and butter" since the 1980's.
It would be very helpful to have graphic scale and material quantities (general notes) on the PDF's.......as most builders who will be compelled to use your YouTube tutors (like myself) will be able to "hands on" the references given for future needs much easier......just a thought.
Yes, I was aware that the Chipmunk was not a beginner build......but since I only responded related to the attachments on that link.........you get the picture....lol
Thanks again for sharing here, I am quite impressed with your material......you've been very diligent in your care, attention to detail and presentation (minus a few ingredients).........I hope the guys here who have this interest pursue your material.........!
